Harry Bertoia

If you have seen a sculpture in a gallery that looks odd yet beautiful at the same time, chances are that it was designed by none other than Harry Bertoia. For several years, this Italian-born sound art sculptor and modern art design has designed and built countless sculptures and has contributed much to the field of modern art.

Perhaps one of the most important contributions Bertoia gave to the industry was Sound Sculpture in which he designed various metal works that can manipulate both light and sound. When he was studying welding at the Santa Monica College of California in the late 1940s, he began to experiment with various metals in his personal evening time.

He noted that lights and sound, if given enough space, would play around the shapes in the metal which give off a surreal yet aesthetically pleasing appeal. With one metal rod or sheet at a time, Bertoia would craft each of his artworks into several unique shapes. This includes elements of nature like trees and shrubs and even imagery straight from a surrealist's imagination.

Though Bertoia's art pieces are too many to count, there are quite a few that do stand out and are regarded as his best works. His series of ten albums, all named the "Sonambient", are several musical pieces all made by sound going through each of his earlier works to produce a surreal-like harmony. Bertoia's "Sunburst" is considered one of his finest as it symbolizes his mastery over the manipulation of sound and the elements of nature to create a stunning piece of work.
